Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day group commemorations


The anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings is nearly upon us.

This year marks 80 years since the bombs were dropped, changing the course of history as a result.

In addition to London CND’s Tavistock Square commemorations, many groups across the capital are holding Hiroshima and Nagasaki commemorations of their own. To find out if your local group is holding an event, please see below.

30 July

No More Hiroshimas Space Theatre

The Space Theatre, 269 Westferry Road, E14 3RS will be having an evening of readings about nuclear weapons, including a reading of Ann Garrett's play 'Give Peace a Chance' on Wednesday, 30th July, starting at 7.30.  

Several buses go down West Ferry Road from Canary Wharf DLR and Tube stations (Jubilee and Elizabeth lines), including the 135, 277, and D7. The bus stop is 'Crews St / Space Theatre. 

Tickets are available from the Space website, www.space.org.uk. It's free, but £10 if you want to support the Space. You need to book a ticket though. At the end of the show there will be a collection for CND (cash or card).

6 August

Bromley Borough Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Vigil opposite the Churchill Theatre, 12 -3 pm. Poems and speeches.  Followed by the throwing of white chrysanthemums on the lake in Church House Gardens. 

Kingston Peace Council

Join Kingston Peace Council’s town centre vigil at noon, followed at 8-9 pm by a commemorative event at Canbury Gardens, Kingston Riverside, attended by the Kingston-upon-Thames Mayor.

Merton Peace Coalition/CND

No More Hiroshimas

7:15 pm-9:15 pm

Merton Peace Coalition will commemorate Hiroshima with speakers, prose, poetry and song, floating candles in origami boats on Rushmere Pond, Wimbledon Common

Finchley CND

Finchley CND and the Phoenix Cinema Present Stanley Kubrick’s classic Dr. Strangelove.

Doors 7:30 Film at 8:00 pm

The film will be followed by a silence in memory of the bombing and a Q&A with

Forest Hill and Sydenham, and Lewisham/Greenwich CND

Forest Hill & Sydenham and Lewisham & Greenwich CND groups are getting together for a peace picnic, 6-9 pm in the garden of Mycenae House, SE3 7SE. A minute’s silence and short address will be followed by music and poetry. In the event of rain, the event will take place in the hall.

8 August

Bromley CND

The Pop Up Players will be performing Ann Garrett’s new play, Give Peace A Chance at Blackheath Quaker Meeting House at 8 pm.

9 August

Essex CND

Showing of Silent Fallout film at Friends House, Euston Road, 2.30-4 pm, preceded by a short talk on The Standing Boy of Nagasaki and the photography of Joe O'Donnell.

Cherry Tree Commemoration, Victoria Park

11 am to 11:30 am

Commemoration at the cherry tree planted in the 1980s in memory of the victims of the two atomic bombs, in Victoria Park, Finchley. There will be music, poetry and a minute's silence. Everyone is welcome. 

Victoria Park, Ballards Lane, Finchley, London N3. The entrance to the park is opposite Gruneisen Road. Head for the cafe and you'll see us nearby.

Woking Action for Peace/CND

Woking Action for Peace/CND are meeting from 8 pm at The New Inn, Send Rd, GU23 7EN to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki with poems, speeches and songs. The event ends with night lights floated on the River Wey.
