What is the campaign?

London CND aims to get London to oppose Britain’s expansion of its nuclear weapons by supporting the UN Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty. We are calling on London boroughs and individual councillors to sign a Nuclear Free London Pledge.

London would be joining cities around the World including Edinburgh and Glasgow, Paris and Rome, Washington DC and Sydney. Full list of cities available here: https://cities.icanw.org/

The campaign is part of the Cities Appeal of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

To find out how to get involved, see the section ‘What can you do’ below.

Why is this campaign important to Londoners?

  • US nukes have returned to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, about 70 miles from our city

  • Britain plans to buy nuclear capable jets at a cost of £1 billion — this is how much London councils needs to meet budgetary deficits.

Both these factors make London vulnerable

Who is the campaign aimed at?

Our campaign targets London borough councils and individual councillors. We are asking them to sign up to the Nuclear Free London Pledge.

We are also campaigning mayors of London boroughs to join Mayors For Peace.

What can you do?

  • In the run up to the local elections on 7 May, write to your candidates.

  • Ask them to sign up to the Nuclear Free London Appeal if they are elected and send them the 5 reasons.

Write to your candidates using our pro forma letter.

Murad Qureshi, London CND Vice President

My school day recollections of the GLC was London declared as a Nuke Free Zone. So long should those days continue today! In those days the threat was seen as real between the USA & USSR though the threat did die down. But clearly in recent times the threat has increased with matters in the Middle East and Ukraine.

I would urge London boroughs and councillors to take up this urgent challenge.

Campaign news

  • Barnet Green Party has pre-approved the Nuclear Ban pledge which means, if elected, their councillors can sign the pledge if they chose.

  • Sally Spiers offers compelling reasons for local council candidates to oppose the expansion of Britain’s nuclear weapons by promising to sign up to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Read the article here

  • Labour & Coop Party meeting moved a successful motion in support of our Nuclear Free London campaign which will now be circulated to branches across London urging support for the campaign.

  • The first Barnet Green candidate has agreed to sign up to the ICAN pledge. Others are likely to follow.
