Two landmark films of anti-nuclear activism, from the 1950s and 1980s, as relevant today as ever.
March to Aldermaston (1958) documents the four-day Easter march from Trafalgar Square to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment in Hampshire — a formative moment for CND and Britain's 'Free Cinema' movement, made by anonymous film technicians including Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz.
Carry Greenham Home (1982–3) captures the Greenham Common Peace Camp, where women mounted fierce non-violent resistance to the siting of nuclear weapons in Berkshire. Filmed by young film students Beeban Kidron and Amanda Richardson, it remains a seminal work of British feminist cinema.
The screening includes an introduction from Ade Cooper (Contemporary Films) and a post-screening panel with Selina Robertson, Beeban Kidron, Amanda Richardson and Guy Westwell.
The screening takes place in Hackney’s Rio Cinema on Kinsgland High Street
