London CND aims to get London to oppose Britain’s expansion of its nuclear weapons by supporting the UN Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty.
We are calling on London boroughs and individual councillors to sign a Nuclear Free London Pledge.
London would be joining cities around the World including Edinburgh and Glasgow, Paris and Rome, Washington DC and Sydney. Full list of cities available here: https://cities.icanw.org/
The campaign is part of the Cities Appeal of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
The campaign:
Make London a city that opposes all activities related to nuclear weapons

Why is this campaign important to Londoners?
Here are the five reasons we believe Londoners and our elected representatives should oppose Britain’s nuclear weapons expansion:
Billions will be spent on expanding Britain’s nuclear arsenal and not on rebuilding the British economy.
Increasing Britain’s nuclear weapons makes us more dependent on the USA, an aggressive and unreliable ally
Increasing Britain’s nuclear arsenal breaks Britain’s legal obligations to the Non-Proliferation Treaty
Increasing the numbers of nuclear weapons increases the threat of nuclear war
Expanding Britain’s nuclear arsenal and agreeing to have US nukes has been done without the scrutiny of Parliament
Who do we need to contact?
We are asking London borough councils and individual councillors to sign up to the Nuclear Free London Pledge.
We are also asking mayors of London boroughs to join Mayors For Peace.
To write to councillors and mayors, we have a pro forma letter.

Murad Qureshi, London CND Vice President
My school day recollections of the GLC was London declared as a Nuke Free Zone. So long should those days continue today! In those days the threat was seen as real between the USA & USSR though the threat did die down. But clearly in recent times the threat has increased with matters in the Middle East and Ukraine.
I would urge London boroughs and councillors to take up this urgent challenge.
How to sign up
The councillor fills in this form and emails it to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) at info@icanw.org, and ICAN will add the name to their lists of signatories. Information can be found here.
A city, or in the case of London, London boroughs, can also sign up. This requires the council to pass a motion to that effect. If that occurs, an official of the council simply emails info@icanw.org to confirm that the borough would like to join up to the ICAN's Cities Appeal. The city will be added to the list of signatories.
