CND campaigning on Ukraine tends to focus, rightly, on the risk of nuclear war that the global polarisation between the US and China and Russia brings. At London CND's recent annual conference, CND Vice President Kate Hudson, highlighted some global consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war, in addition to the terrible and tragic consequences on the people of Ukraine.
Kate outlined the impact on the global economy with significant energy and food price increases in Britain and Europe, as well as the affect of increasing military spending. In some parts of the global South, however, food insecurity means an increased risk of starvation and malnutrition, with consequent social unrest. Other significant outcomes include deglobalisation, direct and indirect climate impacts, and of course on international politics. This is all the more reason for the peace movement to work strengthen our alliances, work for peace, and make the case against war and nuclear weapons.
