Can the Iran Ceasefire Hold?

A shiver went round the world, when President Trump threatened to ‘destroy an entire civilisation’. The threat carried the clear implication of nuclear war against Iran. CND welcomes the two week conditional ceasefire to prepare negotiations, but we also recognise how fragile the temporary end to hostilities is. 

Israel denies the ceasefire applies to Lebanon and continues to bomb the south of the country, Only hours after the conditional ceasefire was announced, the IDF struck 100 civilian targets in the space of 10 minutes. As a result, Iran has again stopped oil tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz because Israel has breached the ceasefire. 

In the newly released edition of Campaign Magazine, CND Vice Chair Carol Turner spells out CND’s position on the war and assesses the ceasefire in the context of the Trump administration’s wider policy on Iran. US aims are clear and consistent, she points out, the military means of achieving them are not.
